Early mass-market paperback edition of James Baldwin’s landmark The Fire Next Time, published by Dell Publishing in August 1964. The copyright page explicitly states “First Dell printing — August, 1964.” Dell book no. 2542, with the original 50¢ cover price and striking black cover with bold yellow, orange, and red typography.
Originally published in hardcover by Dial Press in 1963, The Fire Next Time became one of the defining works of the Civil Rights era, combining memoir, social criticism, religion, race, and American history. This Dell issue is the first paperback edition/first Dell printing, making it considerably more collectible than later mass-market reprints.
This copy presents well externally, with bright cover colors, a straight spine, green-stained page edges, and only light edge and corner wear. There is a previous-owner inscription on the opening page, visible in the photos. Overall a strong vintage copy of an important Baldwin title.
