Vintage Signet mass-market paperback edition of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, published by the New American Library by arrangement with Little, Brown. This is Signet D1667, with the original 50¢ cover price, and the copyright page identifies it as the 20th printing, February 1962. The classic illustrated cover features Holden Caulfield in his red hunting cap and the memorable promotional line, “This unusual book may shock you…” This early-1960s Signet issue is substantially more collectible than later mass-market reprints and retains the desirable original mid-century cover design.
The copy shows light edge and corner wear, age toning, and a small dark mark to the fore-edge, but remains attractive and complete with a solid binding. Open Library records the D1667 Signet issue as a 192-page mass-market edition, and comparable 1962 D1667 printings are documented in the low-20s printing range.
