Stephen King’s landmark vampire novel in the 2005 Doubleday Illustrated Edition, a beautifully produced and expanded presentation of one of King’s most important early novels. Originally published in 1975 as King’s second novel, ’Salem’s Lot follows writer Ben Mears as he returns to the small Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot and gradually discovers that something ancient and predatory has taken hold of the community.
This special edition goes well beyond a standard reissue. It features atmospheric black-and-white photography by Jerry N. Uelsmann, a new introduction by Stephen King, and substantial previously unpublished material, including deleted and alternate passages that provide a fascinating look at the development of the novel. It also includes the related short stories “Jerusalem’s Lot” and “One for the Road,” making this one of the most complete presentations of the ’Salem’s Lot story and its surrounding mythology.
The edition is particularly striking as a physical book, with its oversized format, black cloth binding, silver spine lettering, photographic endpapers and full-page illustrations throughout. The dark photographic treatment gives the book a distinctly different character from the standard trade editions and makes it an attractive edition for both reading and collecting.
