Patternmaster is the novel that introduced Butler’s Patternist universe, a far-future society structured around telepathic power, hierarchy, inheritance, and control. Although later books in the Patternist sequence move backward chronologically, this was Butler’s first published novel and remains an important early work in her career. The book already shows many of the themes that would define her fiction: power and domination, biological difference, social hierarchy, survival, and the tension between individual freedom and imposed systems.
This copy is in Good to Very Good vintage condition. The covers remain bright and highly presentable, with moderate edge and corner wear, light rubbing, and visible handling consistent with a 1970s mass-market paperback. The red page-edge staining remains strong and distinctive. The binding appears intact, and the overall presentation is considerably better than a typical reading copy of this scarce early Butler paperback.
