Journey to Beloved by Oprah Winfrey (Signed Limited Edition, No. 1156 of 3000, 1998)

A special signed limited edition of Oprah Winfrey’s Journey to Beloved, published in 1998 in connection with the film adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Beloved. This is copy number 1156 of only 3,000 copies, boldly signed by Oprah Winfrey on the limitation page and housed in the original black cloth-covered slipcase.

Written by Winfrey with photographs by Ken Regan, the book documents her long personal and creative journey toward bringing Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to the screen. Winfrey had been deeply affected by Beloved and spent years developing the project before starring as Sethe in the 1998 film directed by Jonathan Demme. The book combines Winfrey’s reflections on the novel, slavery, memory, trauma, and the making of the film with extensive behind-the-scenes and production photography. Contemporary dealer descriptions identify the volume as a 165-page illustrated quarto and specifically distinguish this numbered signed issue from the regular trade edition.

This copy appears exceptionally well preserved. The photographic boards are bright and clean, the black cloth spine remains sharp, the interior appears crisp and clean, and the limitation/signature page is excellent. The original publisher’s slipcase is present, which is important to both completeness and value. Based on the photographs, I would describe the book itself as Fine to Near Fine, with the slipcase also appearing Near Fine, subject only to very light shelf handling.

A particularly attractive collectible for Oprah Winfrey, Toni Morrison, Beloved, African American literature, and film-history collectors, and substantially more desirable than the ordinary trade edition because of the genuine signature, limitation, and original slipcase.
