Camp Concentration by Thomas M. Disch (1971 Avon First Paperback Printing)

A striking early paperback edition of Thomas M. Disch’s Camp Concentration, one of the landmark works of 1960s New Wave science fiction. Originally published in 1968, the novel follows conscientious objectors imprisoned in a secret military installation where they are deliberately infected with a modified strain of syphilis that dramatically increases intelligence while ultimately proving fatal. It is dark, cerebral, satirical science fiction dealing with genius, morality, war, government experimentation, religion, and the relationship between creativity and madness.

This is the first Avon printing, June 1971, as stated on the copyright page, and the cover announces it as the novel’s first paperback appearance. Particularly attractive period production with the surreal illustrated wraparound design and bright red-stained page edges—a great example of early-1970s speculative-fiction design.

Condition is Very Good, especially appealing for a 55-year-old mass-market paperback. Covers remain bright and clean with strong color; spine is intact and quite presentable; interior appears clean and sound. There is moderate age toning to the text block, light rubbing/handling wear, a few small edge/corner imperfections, and some wear visible along the upper portion of the rear cover.
